Rivian R1T Home Charging: The Bay Area Owner's Guide

Installation Notes for Rivian Rivian R1T

  • The Rivian R1T adopted NACS in 2024. Owners with 2024+ vehicles can use a Tesla Wall Connector with a Rivian-to-Tesla adapter or a J1772 charger with Rivian's included adapter.

  • The Max Pack (135 kWh) is enormous — at 11.5 kW, expect 12–14 hours for a full charge. For daily top-ups, you're adding about 25 miles per hour. Overnight charging handles most usage scenarios.

  • A 50A circuit is standard, but if your panel has space, sizing up to 60A gives you a buffer for the large battery. We typically recommend 6 AWG copper wire for 50A runs.

  • The R1T is tall and wide — confirm your garage will accommodate it before we schedule the install. Most single-car garages in the Bay Area fit the R1T with careful positioning.

  • For 100A panels, DPM via Grizzl-E or Emporia is strongly recommended given the R1T's large battery draw — without DPM, simultaneous EV charging + HVAC can trip your main breaker.
